FIVE FACTS ABOUT SYRINGE EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

Reduces Disease Transmission: Needle exchange programs significantly reduce the spread of blood-borne diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C by providing users with clean, sterile needles and safely disposing of used ones.

Decreases Overdose Deaths: These programs often provide access to life-saving resources like Narcan (naloxone), which can reverse opioid overdoses, leading to a decrease in overdose-related deaths.

Encourages Healthier Behaviors: Participants in needle exchange programs are more likely to engage with healthcare services, including addiction treatment and counseling, which can lead to healthier long-term outcomes.

Reduces Public Health Costs: By preventing the spread of infectious diseases and reducing the need for emergency medical care, needle exchange programs help lower overall public health costs.

Promotes Public Safety: Needle exchange programs help keep communities safer by reducing the number of discarded needles in public spaces, decreasing the risk of accidental needle sticks and the spread of infections in the community.
